Cut down on the work - No till

22 Oct 2010

This goes to show how little effort you need to put in to turning the soil, just get the beds shaped and don't dig again, just add lots of mulch and compost. For a detailed plan of how to start a garden like this, check out Jonathan White's food growing system

Black/Brown spots on Tomato Leaves?

30 Aug 2010

Quite a few people are asking why their tomato plants that were growing very healthily, have suddenly developed dark spots on the lower leaves and seem to be dying from the bottom up? In most cases this is due to fungal disease. To slow down the spread of the fungal spores, remove the effected lower leaves and put in the rubbish bin, not in the compost. Prunning the lateral shoots off will also help increase the airflow though the plants. It is a good idea to use a preventative copper spray to make the leaf surfaces unattractive for fungal spores to delelop and grow. Kocide is a nice easy spray to mix and apply. Try and get up under the leaves as well.

Rainbow Chard

14 Aug 2010

Why just grow Silverbeet when you can make a colourful statement in your garden by growing a rainbow or red legs variety which have multi coloured stems? Easy to grow and it does best in these cooler months.

Eco Neem

24 May 2010

Eco Neem will do everything Eco Oil can do plus lots more. In the past, grasshoppers have been difficult to control organically but not any more, Eco Neem will protect your crops. Also in the past, Dipel has been the best way to get rid of caterpillars but now, Eco Neem will cover them as well. So Eco Neem is really a great all round organic pest controller, from all the soft body bugs like aphids and mealy bug to mites, caterpillars and grasshoppers.
