Lemons like it hot

31 Jan 2008

This is a Lots of Lemons that belongs to my mother situated in far western Qld. It is coping with day time temperatures well past the 40 degree mark. The tubing attached keeps it automatically watered through a Wetpot, see www.productivegardens.com.au/collections/efficient-watering-systems-1
It has just put on a lot of new growth and as soon as that wood hardens off, it should flower again and set fruit.

Back at Beelarong

23 Jan 2008

We were back at Beelarong Community Farm today to plant up one of our raised ring gardens which will be used as a productive display.

I am including the information from their brochure. It’s well worth the time to go along and have a look and join in.

Local Organic Community Farming

Just 7 km from the city, at Beelarong Community Farm, Cnr Beverley and York sts, Morningside, we are growing organic, chemical free produce in our wonderful sustainable farming environment.
Being committed to the principals of sustainable living, even our infrastructure and amenities are sustainable! Besides the way in which we grow our produce, other features of the farm include: a grey water system, solar power, windy loo & innovative composting techiques.
We are always looking for new people to share our environment and ideas with. Our members meet twice a week on Wednesday mornings and Sunday mornings – why not come along and join in?
Private group and school tours can also be arranged for a minimal charge.
For further information, contact Joanne Seeberg on 0418 737207 or email beelarong@hotmail.com.au

Best use of a small space

22 Jan 2008

Living in a town house which doesn’t have much garden area doesn’t mean you can’t grow lots of your own fresh vegetables. As these pictures show, the people living in this town house at East Brisbane have been creative with what space they do have and have chosen containers that will work for them. This one gets the thumbs up from me as a productive garden!

What's happening in my garden.

20 Jan 2008

We cleared the beds out over Christmas and have been applying plenty of compost and other organic matter in preparation for planting out over the next few weeks.

Our pineapple bed has liked the recent rain and the fruit are filling out nicely.

The asparagus have been in for a couple of years and are pushing up plenty of lovely fresh spears.

The chooks like digging through a pile of fresh lawn clippings. Eventually it will all go into the Aero bin.

Productive garden at Scarborough

18 Jan 2008

I had pleasure in visiting the garden of Sharron, Stephen, Hannah and Liam at their Scarborough home. Walking in through rows of tall corn, you get the feeling that all areas of the garden are utilized to the max to be productive.

They have done a lot of work to improve the soil and to build a herb spiral.

Fruit trees are being planted, a compost bin and worm farm are converting waste into rich fertiliser and raised tank rings are being prepared for vegetables.
