Productive Gardens

I was pleased to have had a visit today from Karen Siepen, director of Renewable Carbon Resources Australia (RCRA). She has developed a technique of producing charcoal products that add carbon to the soil and enhances soil vitality. This carbon also assists in retaining water and sequestors carbon dioxide that would otherwise be released into the air.

Science has determined that Charcoal-Carbon or Biochar as it is also known increases productivity levels of soils. Science has also shown that soil carbon levels play an enormous part in the general health of soils and the interaction of CO2 released into the atmosphere. One very important discovery that science has made is that RCRA Charcoal-Carbon has achieved a high carbon retention level which means they are providing a quality carbon product.

Here are a few pics of my garden. Like I said, I ripped out half of an ugly looking hedge at the front of my property and have just taken out the rest so I can plant more varieties. As you can see from the pics the garden is at the front of my property as this is the only place I have for a vege garden.
I started in early June just after all that nice soaking rain we had and just as you suggested to do in your newsletter at the time. After preparing I let the bed sit for 2 weeks and then planted. So it has just been 8 weeks from planting and we have been eating the salad greens for several weeks now.I have been harvesting the cos lettuce by picking the outer leaves but I’m not too sure how long I will be able to do this for before I need to take it out completely. I can really appreciate the need for planting my own seeds now so that I have a succession of crops.

Now is a great time to start planting potatoes in SE Qld. I am planting out one bed this week with Sebago seed potatoes and also throwing in some sweet potatoes. These are already shooting and soon I’ll be able to take cuttings and spread them around.
