Raised Garden Beds

One of the most productive ways to grow lots of your own herbs and vegetables is by setting up a raised garden bed. If you can remember back, it’s quite likely that your grandmother may have had a corrugated raised garden bed situated quite close to the kitchen so she could harvest what she needed as she needed it. Meals were prepared from these freshly picked vegetables and didn’t they taste delicious!

Fast forward a few years and it makes more sense than ever to grow some of your own fresh veg. These raised garden beds make that very easy to do.

TIP – Plant taller vegies like tomatoes & cucumbers on stakes at the southern side of the raised bed, your favorites like celery, capsicum, shallots, dwarf beans, basil along the centre row and lower growers like lettuce, beetroot, strawberries & parsley along the front.

Many vegetable gardens fail because the soil holds to much moisture and the plants become water logged. The easiest way to overcome this problem is to establish a raised garden to give automatic drainage. When investigating raised gardens, test that you can reach the middle from both sides. This way you won’t need to step on the garden which compacts the soil. This allows oxygen, water and fertiliser nutrients to penetrate down past the root zone where they’re required. The result – large crops of healthy, nutritious vegetables that taste divine.
